Some exhibitions exist simply to display art. Others exist to celebrate something deeper — the human spirit, resilience, and the extraordinary capacity for creativity to flourish even in the face of significant physical challenge. Shaping Hearts 2023, held in Singapore from 11 to 26 November 2023, was very much the latter: a vibrant, multi-day celebration that brought together art, community, and inspiration in equal measure.
A Celebration of "Heartists"
At the heart of Shaping Hearts 2023 lay a beautifully chosen concept: the celebration of "Heartists" — artists with disabilities who have overcome challenges and created masterpieces that showcase strength and resilience. Rather than framing disability as a limitation to be acknowledged and moved past, Shaping Hearts placed the artistic achievements of its participating Heartists front and centre, inviting visitors to appreciate their work first and foremost through the lens of talent, skill, and creative vision.
Over the course of the exhibition's two-and-a-half-week run, more than 150 artists exhibited their work, sharing not only their paintings but their personal stories — stories that, by all accounts, inspired everyone who attended. This combination of visual art and personal narrative gave the exhibition a distinctly human dimension, transforming the experience of viewing a painting into something considerably richer: an invitation to understand the journey, determination, and lived experience behind each piece.

Representing the Association in Singapore
Among the more than 150 participating artists, the Association was proudly represented by an impressive delegation of talented mouth painters. Scholarship Holders Aaron Yeo Kwok Chian, Christina Lau Lay Lian, Daniel Beng Leong Tan, Kaini Zhang, Raymond Khee Huat Tan, and William Ngo, alongside Member Tan Kok Leong, all took part in the exhibition — seven accomplished mouth painters whose presence brought the Association's distinct artistic tradition vividly into this broader celebration of Heartists from across Singapore.
This strong representation offered a wonderful opportunity to showcase the specific artistry of mouth painting within the broader context of Shaping Hearts' celebration of disabled artists. For visitors encountering mouth painting for the first time, the presence of seven skilled practitioners together in one place offered a particularly rich and comprehensive introduction to the technique and its remarkable creative possibilities.

As the festival drew to its close on 26 November, it left behind more than an impressive collection of sold and exhibited paintings. It left a renewed public appreciation for the extraordinary talent within Singapore's community of artists with disabilities — and a powerful reminder that when given the platform and recognition they deserve, Heartists like Aaron Yeo Kwok Chian, Christina Lau Lay Lian, Daniel Beng Leong Tan, Kaini Zhang, Raymond Khee Huat Tan, William Ngo, and Tan Kok Leong can inspire entire communities through the strength, beauty, and resilience embodied in their art.
